Did you know untreated sewage is getting released into rivers and the sea? Sewage is dirty water which might have wees and poos or harmful chemicals in it! It is released through Combined Sewer Overflows, which are supposed to be used for emergencies when it rains loads and loads but they’re being used all the time instead. In 2019, untreated sewage ended up in UK rivers more than 200,000 times.
Sewage ending up in rivers is not good for animals and wildlife. It’s also not good for people who like to play in the rivers because it can make them poorly.
Surfers Against Sewage and other water charities are campaigning to End Sewage Pollution. There’s a Bill that’s going to be talked about and voted on in Parliament on 15th January 2021 called the Sewage (Inland Waters) Bill. The Sewage (Inland Waters) Bill will make it so water companies have to stop releasing untreated sewage into rivers in England. A Bill is a new law which isn’t made quite yet but they’re thinking about it. For the law to get made, lots of MPs need to vote for it.
Surfers Against Sewage are asking people to write to their MPs to ask them to support the Sewage (Inland Waters) Bill and to vote for it when it is talked about in Parliament. Some MPs have already put their names down to say they support the Bill. Our MP, Andrew Mitchell, is one of the MPs who is supporting the Bill.
It’s good that he is supporting the Bill but we need to make sure he definitely turns up and votes for it and really tries hard to get lots of other MPs to vote for it too. To try and encourage him to do everything he can to help, I sent him a message standing in the Plants Brook, one of our local rivers, with my brothers holding up a sign saying: “Andrew Mitchell, Thank You For Protecting Our Rivers”. Mummy took a photo of us and emailed it to Andrew Mitchell so he could see it.
This is what you can do to help. You can send a letter to your MP asking them to support and vote for the Sewage (Inland Waters) Bill on 15th January 2021. Thank you.
