The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch Results came out today.
The top ten birds were:
- House sparrow
- Blue tit
- Great tit
- Long-tailed tit
The top two birds are the same as the top two birds we saw when we did our Big Garden Birdwatch. We saw 25 house sparrows and 10 starlings. Our third most was the collared dove, which isn’t even in the top ten. We saw 6 collared doves. We saw all the birds in the top ten when we did our Big Garden Birdwatch.
The Big Garden Birdwatch has been going on since 1979. That’s 41 years! It’s important because doing it every year helps to show changes in the numbers of birds coming into gardens. Although house sparrows and starlings are still the most commonly seen birds the number of them has dropped down quite a bit since 1979. House sparrows have dropped by 53% and starlings have dropped by 80%. I think that’s quite sad. We help starlings and house sparrows in our garden by giving them bird food and we’ve put a house sparrow nest box on the front of our house.
